Titanium Umbrella Head Bolts: Things to Know Before You Buy

Having worked in the fastener industry for years, I've noticed a recurring issue: more people end up with the wrong titanium bolts than simply overpaying for them. Products priced at a few cents versus those costing several dollars each might all be labeled "titanium alloy," but they differ significantly in material grade, head geometry, and thread precision-resulting in a completely different experience during installation. We've been producing these titanium umbrella head bolts for quite some time, and I'd like to address the questions we hear most often-and the common pitfalls to avoid.

First, let's talk about material grades: Gr5 vs. Gr2

There's a massive difference in strength. Our titanium umbrella head bolts are made from Gr5 (Ti-6Al-4V) titanium. They offer a minimum tensile strength of approximately 895 MPa, whereas Gr2 titanium only reaches about 344 MPa. You can feel the difference immediately: Gr2 bolts start to feel "soft" or "mushy" when tightened to a certain torque, while Gr5 bolts remain solid and rigid. Many low-cost titanium bolts on the market are actually made from Gr2 (commercially pure) titanium, yet the product listings simply state "titanium alloy" without specifying the grade. Checking the specification sheet before you buy can save you a lot of trouble. We know that many of our customers use these bolts for customizing motorcycles and other vehicles; they aren't just for aesthetics-they are a matter of safety. High-strength components provide an extra layer of security. Our M6 and M8 bolts are both made from Gr5 titanium-if it's labeled as Gr5, you can generally buy with confidence.

What is the size of the "umbrella" head?

For M6 bolts, it is 14mm; for M8, it is 16mm. The head is wider than that of a standard cap head bolt, while the height remains around 5mm. This dimension is not arbitrary; the larger contact area ensures that pressure is distributed more evenly when tightened, rather than being concentrated on a few small points. For components like bottle cage mounts on carbon fiber frames, plastic fender mounts, or thin-walled aluminum engine guards-where standard bolts might leave indentations or marks when tightened-using these umbrella head bolts can significantly mitigate the issue. Conversely, if the mounting space is tight or there are obstructions around the head, these bolts might not fit. Therefore, it is best to measure the hole diameter and the surrounding clearance before placing your order.

Mostly hex-socket (Allen) heads; some M6 bolts use a T30 Torx (star) drive.

Hex-socket bolts require a 4mm or 5mm hex key (for M6 and M8 sizes, respectively)-common tools found in most households. The T30 Torx drive, found on some M6 bolts, offers a larger contact surface, making it less prone to stripping during repeated installation and removal. If you frequently adjust your bike or remove protective covers, the Torx drive is more durable; for components that are installed once and left alone, a standard hex-socket is perfectly sufficient. Regardless of the type, avoid using power tools for installation-titanium has poor thermal conductivity, meaning heat generated by high-speed rotation cannot dissipate, which can easily damage the drive recess or the threads.

Weight: 8 grams for an M8×25 bolt.

A steel bolt of the same specifications weighs around 14–15 grams, meaning this titanium version cuts the weight by nearly half. One might ask: how much weight can you really save with just a few bolts? Individually, the difference is negligible. However, when you consider all the bolts used on a bicycle-for water bottle cages, mudguards, chain guards, and stem caps-or the 20 to 30 bolts found around a motorcycle's engine casing and fairings, the total weight savings can reach several hundred grams. While this may not be a significant reduction for casual riding, in a competitive racing environment, this difference in weight could translate into the split-second margins that determine the outcome of a race.

Regarding corrosion resistance

Titanium is impervious to water, but avoid direct, bare-metal contact with aluminum components. Titanium itself is resistant to water and salt spray; if its surface oxide layer is scratched off, it can regenerate on its own. Steel bolts cannot compare-after just a few rain showers, their threads begin to rust, making them frustratingly difficult to remove. One important caveat: if titanium comes into direct contact with an aluminum alloy in a humid environment, galvanic corrosion will occur, effectively "eating away" at the aluminum. If the mounting surface is made of aluminum alloy (as is the case with many bicycle frames and engine casings), apply an anti-seize compound to the threads or use a nylon washer as a spacer. There is no such concern when using titanium with carbon fiber; direct contact is perfectly fine.
